Our Nido environment (Italian for nest) is for babies between the ages of six months to about eighteen months. The Nido responds to the needs of the baby and the parents. Dr. Maria Montessori believed that education is an "aid to life" which begins at conception. As the internal environment is perfectly suited for the growing foetus we must also take careful consideration when preparing the external environments to which he or she is going to be exposed. It is essential in aiding the child to transition smoothly into the outside world.

Our environment is specially prepared to offer the real world through appropriate activities so that the child's desire to fit into society is fulfilled. It is Montessori who stated that children prefer order to chaos and reality over fantasy.

The child has an innate need to strive for independence. The adults in the Nido will support the child by observing the child's cues with respect to eating, dressing, choosing an activity and toilet learning independently. In this way, the child may move forward wholesomely at his or her own pace with the aid of specially engineered Montessori materials and child-sized furniture.

Work is the child's play. Through this work, the child will have much opportunity to develop and refine gross and fine motor skills, be supported with the development of locomotion, hand/eye coordination, and hear precise and resplendent language.

It is our aim that the child in the Nido will come to feel that the world is a supportive and safe environment. This will aid in the building blocks of a strong foundation of self-confidence, self-worth and respect for self and others. Through the microcosm of the environment, we are optimistic that the child will gain a sense of being an independent individual within an interdependent society.

As the child continues on the path of development, our Infant Community which is our Toddler room is set to satisfy and stimulate newfound needs.
